How many impactful scenes did we see in Final Fantasy XV? The Dawn Trailers more than what we’ve seen in the game.
Fifiteen years ago…
If only this game were fifteen years in the making. I’m glad it wasn’t, but would we have had something more poignant?
Fate would fall to the father and son of Lucis.
You’d think this game would hint to the relationship between Noctis and Regis. Why else would we get over a minute of tearful Regis holding Noctis? We can see his emotion in this scene. But it raises questions that would pique our interest. Why is he crying? And what’s that in the background? Wait, is that Diamond Weapon? No, it’s Bahamut. The shadow of Bahamut looms ominously over the Lucii kingdom, literally foreshadowing what’s to come. Now we can piece together why Regis is so mournful. He knows what’s in store for his son. But we needed a little bit more narrative, to make the game’s story feel complete.
This powerful scene, promising depth, and emotion, never made it into the final game. We never really see too much depth with Noctis and his father. Regis dies, and Noctis can go fishing later with the knowledge of his death. Gladios father dies, and they never meant them. So this game was not kind to fathers. Seriously. Remember when Noctis’ father does die? He has the opportunity to go fishing while taking selfies. What happened to this game in development? That’s actually more depressing, because what type of son forgets his father dies?
Remember when Regis sends Noctis off, and the son is also dismissive of the father? We get no background for this. He just seems annoyed. “Dad, I’m trying to hang with my bros, quit cramping my style”. It’s an immature response, but we don’t know this is a character flaw unless you watch the anime. And even then, it’s not really that informative.
Ah, and Luna’s abuse scenes. We never got this scene, but fans wanted to see Lunafreya beatings. I think they misguidedly thought this would build character for her. Well, she would have had a more interesting backstory. But the only difference from the Dawn trailer and the game is the abuse. She’s still boring. We don’t really know too much of her. Luna lived in captivity for her entire life. We could only imagine what she went through. Because of the cuts, we had no choice.
We get a new Dawn trailer here. What does Dawn mean? Probably something to do with the sleep motif. Noctis sleeps in the car. The name of his Kingdom is Insomnia. But why? What does it all mean? Nothing anymore. Even if they make a trite comparison to New York City, the city that never sleeps, it’s a non-issue.
But this is 2.0, which means it’s an improvement over the other game. I guess the Dawn trailer 2.0 is a subtle hint. We see shorter scenes of everything. Maybe this was for time constraints, but it was a foreshadowing. Sure, we see Luna’s abuse. We see Regis’ tearful embrace. The video is half as long. They really wanted us to know what would be in the game, with the little time they gave us.
At the time, we didn’t know what to expect from Final Fantasy XV. We thought everything we saw was going to be in the game. But, none of this was the case.
