I’ve heard it said that Final Fantasy VI’s has no main character. But what if they all were the main character? In a sense, they are in their own arc. I think the developers wanted to create a story that realized this narrative. Yet, they couldn’t since the story was fairly linear. Sometimes the character arcs intersect, but the dominant focus is usually on one character at a time.
Remember this scene earlier in the game?
You got to choose your own path for this scenario. You could see an aspect of the story you would have never seen before. However, I would like to see the entire remake of Final Fantasy VI played this way.
We could start Final Fantasy VI with any of the fourteen characters, complete with their own backstories? Sure, they’d have to rewrite the character arcs to make them longer. Some sections would necessarily be shorter than others. But the replayability would be expansive.
Maybe in the “intended” “original” story, we’d start as Terra in a Magitek suit. But what if in another playthrough, we start as Locke roaming Narshe searching for treasure? With either player, we’d get to see the story through their eyes. The narrative would change based on who you controlled.
We could accomplish this by switching characters out of the party as we progress through the main story as well.
Something like this would be so expansive, so multifaceted, I’m sure that it might work only on the PlayStation 5.
