I just couldn’t believe they were making a movie about Final Fantasy VII. This is what I wanted Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within to be. I wanted it to be a Final Fantasy movie based on a game I played. Final Fantasy VII was perfect, but it was the most popular Final Fantasy game ever.
I wasn’t really thinking about the ramifications of a Final Fantasy VII movie. I thought Sakaguchi said no sequels? Well, by this time, he was no longer with the company. In fact, nearly half a decade before Square Enix released Final Fantasy X-2. This was a sequel of their second most popular Final Fantasy title. Why wouldn’t they make a movie of Final Fantasy VII?
But a movie of Final Fantasy VII? That game is nearly 40 hours. Even if there were ten hours of story, could they really make a trilogy? Of course, they decided to make a sequel of Final Fantasy VII, entitled Advent Children.
And it was pure fan service.
But not even the good fan service that put a smile on your face. This was fan service that left more questions than answers. Why is Rufus alive? Did he get out of a building? We saw the building explode around him. Why have Reno and Rude, Midgar’s version of the CIA, regressed to comic relief?
Who are these people chasing Cloud, asking? The Remnants of Sephiroth? Why are these fools asking and attacking anyone they can for their mother? Why didn’t the writers just bring Sephiroth back? Well, they do. Now that big climatic battle in Final Fantasy VII remains undercut for cheap Dragonball Z battles.
Apparently, this was among the first media for the Final Fantasy VII compilation. Final Fantasy VII would later spawn:
- Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
- Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
- Last Order: Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy VII G-Bike
- On a Way to Smile
- Final Fantasy VII Lateral Biography: Turks ~The Kids Are Alright~
But why? No one asked for this. And even though the movie was entertaining, I could have done without it. Yet, around this time we did ask for a remake of Final Fantasy VII. Hmmm…”dilly-dally, shilly-shally”.
