Celes Chere is the Gestahlian army’s top Magitek Knight, genetically engineered by Cid. Now, she can wield magic, artificially. Her runic ability can cancel out magic-based attacks, suck the energy into her MP.
Absorbs magic and turns it into MP. Runic remains active until a spell is absorbed or another battle command is given.
But after the World of Ruin, it appears that Celes’ skills will be useless. The Returners have to destroy the Warring Triad, the source of all magic in the world, to defeat Kefka, who are using their power for his benefit. Celes’ was probably would have been THE great general to lead the assault into the Esper world. This is the one battle that might be able to show off her Runic ability.
Runic is Celes’s ability that allows her to absorb spells with her sword. When she uses Runic, the next spell cast by an ally or an enemy is absorbed by Celes’s sword, and she recovers an amount of MP equal to the spell’s casting cost. If the spell is of an element Celes is weak to, the MP recovery doubles. If Celes resists that element, the MP recovery is halved. If Celes is immune to that element, she does not recover MP. If she absorbs the element, she loses MP.
The Returners are using Celes in the same way the Gestahlian army would have: to defeat renegade magic users. Celes could have easily been after Terra, who was mentally unstable. But in this case, the Gestahlian empire infuses Celes with the power to take down the general who would take down the Gestahlian Empire.
But for his entire life, her purpose was to use magic to negate magic use. So what’s going to be her main purpose when the World of Ruin rebuilds? Her meaning as a general would be useless.
Magic was the source for a lot of strife, even in the World of Balance. Espers, magical humans slaves to the Warring Triad, had to live away from the rest of the world. After living in fear, they had to worry about a power hunger emperor who wanted to raid their homeland. The emperor terrorized the world with fear AND magic. Magic was more of a problem than it was an actual benefit.
Now that magic has disappeared from the world, a source for a lot of war and greed disappeared as well. Celes isn’t a pawn to either cause destruction. She also doesn’t have to defend the world from madness. Finally, Celes can start to live her life the way she wants to.
