Gilgamesh makes his debut in Final Fantasy V, yet resurfaces in many other Final Fantasy titles. But I’m afraid that Final Fantasy VI in the timeline is where his journey ends.
In Final Fantasy VI (Advance), he appears as a challenger in the Dragon’s Neck Coliseum. If you bought Excalipor from the Jidoor Auction House, Gilgamesh will no doubt mistake it for the Excalibur. He’ll fight you for it. Once you win, you acquire Gilgamesh as a Magicite.
But we know what magicite is. Magicite is the leftover remains of an Esper. When an Esper dies, magicite is all that’s left behind.
And only Espers can become Magicite.
So was Gilgamesh an Esper this entire time?
Regardless, this is where Gilgamesh will remain until the Returners destroy Kefka. And then all magic from the world simply fades away…
Non-canonically, Gilgamesh might have died in Final Fantasy V. The last time Bartz, Lenna, Faris, and Krile meet Gilgamesh, it’s against the boss Necrophobe. If you defeat him before Gilgamesh arrives, Gilgamesh continues his travels through the rift. If you don’t, Gilgamesh sacrifices himself by exploding!!!
