You can’t tell from looking at the SNES version, but Palom and Porom wear striped costumes. Palom wears and orange clock with green stripes, Parom wears green with orange stripes. Their clothing makes them look like Mage Royalty in a sense. Everyone else in Mysidia wore the traditional White and Black Mage clothing. When compared to Palom and Parom, the mages were like peasantry.
However, their sprites suggest they’re wearing onesies with capes. We can let that slide since they’re just kids. Kids don’t really know what they’re doing at that age. Even though they happen to be child prodigies, they still can’t dress themselves properly. And when they’re kids, why not dress them in something completely ridiculous? They won’t stay that way forever (thanks to the Elder) so might as well laugh while we can.
However, they grew up in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. So you think their taste in clothing would have matured as well. Nope.
For whatever reason, Palom still has the same striped pajama costume he had when he was a kid. Can you believe they make them in size adult? It shows that even though he’s a child prodigy, he’s lazy. Why wouldn’t he wear the traditional black mage outfit all the other Black Mages of Mysidia wear? He does nothing to dress himself properly, and still wears the same thing he did when he was a kid. Speaking of which, he’s wearing a small blue coat that Black Mages would wear. Only, it’s clearly a size for kids. Please don’t tell me this is the style with all the cool kids?
Palom as a constant scowl for looking so ridiculous. Maybe it’s because no one has a bowl to fit over his head to cut his hair? Does he have a black cape? And why does he have one shoulder pad? Does anyone in Final Fantasy have more than one shoulder pad? Cloud Strife only had one shoulder pad. Lightning only had one shoulder pad. Each of those characters was moody. Maybe they’re all upset because they only have ONE shoulder pad yet TWO shoulders. He has a ton of jewelry on which adds flair to his overall design. But it does help that it’s also on the side of his ONE shoulder pad, which puts all the weight on his right side.
However, Palom’s clothing are nothing compared to Porom’s. I’m sure you remember Porom was the polite and respectful White Mage of the game. If anything, she was modest to the point of priggishness. So what happened here? Even worst than Palom’s pajamas is a see-through nightgown mini dress with tights. OK, it’s alluring. The striped tights really make her legs seem really long, while the mini dress makes her torso smaller. Yet it balances out somehow. The sandal laces awkwardly wrap around her ankles and stick out. It’s kind of sloppy, but none of this looks too tasteless. But is this how Porom dresses? She’s as polite as ever in the game. Yet none of this seems like her style. I would never have thought she’d leave the house wearing something like this. Apparently, her transparent dress exposes a side view of her chest. She doesn’t wear any support. In the FMV, it’s a solid pink. But here, you can clearly see her legs. What has it all come to?
