And we know, the Espers in Final Fantasy XII become the Lucavi of Final Fantasy Tactics. They wreck havoc to the land, decimating society and purging races. But then, were they ever something else? We they ever human?
I always love talking about summons (especially those that exist in Final Fantasy XII). I’d love to share a theory I have with the summons that exists in the XII universe.
What if the “gods” (which I think according to lore are the Occuria in this case) decided to not make from scratch these Espers, but make them from things that already existed?
This theory has allusions to Final Fantasy VI. As the three gods descended on the earth to fight a war, humans fled to another realm. In this theory, the humans became Espers after coming in contact with magic.
Of course, we don’t know if the Occuria turned anyone into Espers in Final Fantasy XII. One interesting theory NoDragonsPlz proposes is the origins of Ultima:
Ultima: Angels once walked amongst men, but the Occuria had wiped away nearly all of them, claiming there will not fitting with Occurian design. One Angel managed to escape their wrath. Centuries later, the Occuria finally sniffed out the last angel, hiding amongst them. They decided to be merciful, or should I say, Occurian mercy made her their servant. The last angel, to serve forever more.
So then, Ultima was never a human, but an angel. But then perhaps this gives Ultima motivation to cause havoc on the world. Thanks to Ashe and company, they break the Sun-Cryst, which serves as a tool to control mankind. With the Sun-Cryst destroyed, the Occuria cannot interact with mankind, even protecting them from who comes next.
With the Occuria’s power diminished, Ultima, not content with being a servant, decides to cause havoc on Ivalice. And through this, gathers the other Espers, now known as Lucavi, to rule mankind themselves.
