Back when Final Fantasy XV was Versus XIII, the concept of “Death” was more prominent. Some of the concepts were:
- Etro was the patron goddess of Lucis known as the goddess of death, and Lucis thus had a dark design, being only portrayed at night time, and had prevalent Grim Reaper motifs. The royal family and other citizens of Lucis were to wear black to go with this theme.
- Uniquely for Final Fantasy Versus XIII, it was said that those who had had a near-death experience could “see the light of expiring souls” and gain power from the Kingdom of the Dead.
- The game centered about death, ghosts and hallucination/dreams. Noctis killed the female protagonist before the game started but he didn’t remember. Ardyn was Noctis ancestor and he was responsible of the crystals disappearing over time (the only one left was Lucis crystal). Regis died in front of Noctis because his bodyguards betrayed him.
But of course, some of the concepts carried over, only they foreshadow the ending. The road trip is actually a funeral progression. The characters all wear black as they are attending a funeral. Noctis sleeping in the car on the way, in the back, is like a deceased body in a hearse. The crystal stasis alludes to death as well, in terms of “sleep”.
This isn’t to say that Noctis was dead during the events of the game, but these are the allusions.
