We’ve had Final Fantasy sequels before. Final Fantasy X-2 was the first direct sequel to a mainline Final Fantasy game. And Final Fantasy XIII-2 was the second. Final Fantasy XII was like a prequel to Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. But so far, we haven’t had a direct sequel or prequel to a mainline game that continued the series.
I know Final Fantasy is always innovating, much to the chagrin of their fans. They like to break even their own boundaries and rules from time to time. What if they made a mainline game as a sequel, or even a prequel, to a previous game?
If they do, I’d nominate Final Fantasy XV. They could model some of the game off of A King’s Tale:
Taking place in a fictitious 30 years before FINAL FANTASY XV, this game features retro-style inspired graphics centered around a fast-paced combat system with influences from modern gaming. The in-depth combat system blends intense attacks, devastating magic, mighty summons and unique companion attacks into a singular gaming experience through three diverse locations in the world of FINAL FANTASY XV.
Only update the graphical style and music quality. But they could use the basic combat system. The story would be based more or less on what Regis actually told Noctis:
Restless before bed young Noctis asks his father, King Regis, to tell a fairy tale full of fantasy and adventure instead of just another generic bedtime story. Regis begins with a peaceful day being disrupted when monsters raid the royal capital, Insomnia. Young Regis, joined by Weskham, starts his adventure from the royal capital. Eventually, they are joined by friends Cid and Clarus, where they travel to the plains of Duscae only to discover a mysterious cave where their enemy resides. Throughout the tall tale, King Regis and Noctis interject their own commentary, adding depth and perspective to the story itself.
Of course, there’s a kernel of truth to it as many of the characters in a King’s tale existed. I’d like to see what would have happened with Regis, Clarus, Cid, and Weskham. But only as told in tangent to the original cast. But this might be during flashbacks, in the same way, that Laguna fought with his comrades. Only instead of the past, we’d see them fight a similar battle in tandem in other parts of the world.
Our original party would include Agni, Sky, a certain professional wrestler as the Monk character and others. And who knows, maybe they could incorporate the story and characters of Brave Exvius?
Xavier Wood’s character might be the son of Weskham. They’d all die at the end, that’s why you never heard of them.
