Open world gaming, while a fad, can still work. Open world works well with Final Fantasy. If you remember, you could travel the world once you got your airship, and visit dungeons before the story recommended. Same with Final Fantasy II, once you got Leila’s pirate ship. Action role-playing has taken over. A lot if people would like to see Final Fantasy revisit turned based game play. Maybe even see a return to ATB. However, the younger generations may not want this. Final Fantasy X and under are, unfortunately, relics of the past…
Branching story lines might happen in the series. Fans crave story and authenticity in characters. We all spoke through our disappointment with Final Fantasy XV: we want more characterization and fulfilling stories. We love for characters to interact with each other, either through friendly banter (i.e. Final Fantasy XV) or melodrama (i.e. Final Fantasy XIII).
HD graphics are the norm now. High-resolution sprites are cool. But sprites limit what we can see and do. 3D gives us more depth, freedom of movement and immersion.
But all of the same story beats, plot elements, and Final Fantasy tropes will make an appearance…just enough to warrant the name.
