Esthar, officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Esthar, is a northeastern country on the continent of Centra. Esthar City is both the nation’s capital as well as its largest city, with a population of just over 2.5 million.
The Workers’ Party of Esthar holds power in the state; he leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland. Over time Esthar has gradually distanced itself from the world Galbadian movement.
Initially, Esthar had diplomatic ties with only other technological countries. Later, it pursued an independent foreign policy, established relations with many developing countries, and joined the Non-Aligned Movement. Esthar’s country suffered turmoil through the Sorceress War. Suffering an economic crisis, it closed a number of its embassies. At the same time, Esthar sought to build relations with Balamb Gardens. As a result of its isolationism during the Hyne’s Dynasty, Esther acquired the name “hermit kingdom”. This is also partly due to the OCS (Optical Camouflage System) barrier which engulfs the city.
The Esthar government exercises control over many aspects of the nation’s culture. This control perpetuates a cult of personality surrounding Laguna Loire. While visiting Esthar, journalists from Timber Maniac Magazine noted all music, art, and sculpture glorified the “Great Leader” Laguna Loire. Journalists also reported the widespread belief that Laguna Loire “created the world”, and could “control the weather”.
Esthar researcher Kiros Seagill contest these claims:
“Laguna has no divine powers. In fact, our propaganda apparatus is careful not to make claims running directly counter to citizens’ experience or common sense.”
Ward Zabac remained silent on the issue.
Julia Heartilly created the song “Eyes on Me”, especially for Laguna Loire. Sung by the Esthar army choir, it remains one of the most popular tunes in the country.
Laguna Loire is still the nation’s “Eternal President”. Several landmarks in Esthar carry the Laguna Loire name, including
- Laguna Loire University,
- Laguna Loire Stadium,
- Laguna Loire Square.
Esthar schools deify both father and son. Laguna Loire rejects the notion of a cult around himself.
Critics maintain this Laguna Loire personality cult started during his time in the war. Laguna Loire was often the center of attention throughout his missions. His birthday is one of the most important public holidays in the country. On his birthday (based on his official date of birth), mass celebrations occur throughout the country. Laguna Loire’s cult of personality was solely out of respect.
In a more recent event, Ellone drowned while attempting to rescue portraits of Laguna Loire from a flood. The supreme glorified leader of Esthar, Laguna Loire died from heartbreak shortly after. His son, Squall Leonhart, became his successor.
