Remember the park in Sector 6? The one Aerith visits with both Zack and Cloud?
I’ve been replaying Final Fantasy 7 (hooray for Steam) and something just dawned on me.
This screen in the game always stuck with me. I always liked this little park. You come here with Aeris, she’s like “I can’t believe it’s still here” and it plays one of the cute little tunes (I can’t remember the name of it).
What I realized is this: Reeve Tuesti built this park. He’s notably a philanthropist and he’s the head of Urban Development at Shinra. He’s the guy that goes: “Sir, I’ve set aside the budget for the giant mako cannon as you requested, now may I please talk to you about using some of the budgets for a social project idea I have in Sector 6?” Oh, and he has an affinity for cats. Those look like pretty big fucking cats in that park to me!
Why is this important? Why am I bringing your attention to something so esoteric?
Cait Sith is my favorite character. Put down your pitchforks and torches for a second; I should clarify by saying Reeve is my favorite character. As we know, he controls Cait Sith. He works for “the bad guys”, but he uses it as a chance to do good work for people wherever he can. I like this. It’s interesting and presents us with Snape-like complexity in his character.
He’s also the antithesis of Barret Wallace, another of my favorite characters in the game.
By committing acts of violent eco-terrorism for a greater cause, Barret stands as an opposite to Reeve/Cait Sith. They’re both fighting to make a better world, but they’re doing it in such different ways: Barret through direct action and violence, Reeve through subtle influence and trying to create change from within. Barret does evil things while serving a good cause, Reeve does good things while ultimately serving an evil corporation.
This brings me back to the little park (that I like to think Reeve built). It gets completely destroyed following the destruction of the Sector 7 plate. Shinra blew up the plate in order to take down the Avalanche base of operations and turn public opinion further against them.
By waging a war against the company, with a bombing campaign, these acts of bloody retribution happen. People die or are injured, and on top of the rest of the misery, the children of the Sector 6 slum no longer have their little park to play in.
Reeve’s methods lead to parks being built; Barret’s methods lead to parks being destroyed. To me, this shows that even though he works for a blatantly villainous company, he’s probably getting a little bit more good done in the world.
TL;DR Terrorism leads to the destruction of cute parks built by talking Scottish cat-robot riding on giant stuffed moogle.
I believe this. Reeves was somewhat of a humanist and the only executive on Shinra with a moral compass. He was humanistic, and I’m sure responsible for most of the charities conducted by Shinra. Well, that is if they participated in charities. If they didn’t, he would have. I can’t even say it was completely his fault that the Sector 5 slums became so dilapidated. Who knows how long he was in Urban Development? But I’m sure he would have done something to rebuild them. Even in Dirge of Cerberus, he’s one of the few characters who retains his humanitarian demeanor. He helps the Planet in the World Regenesis Organization, lending aid and fighting Deepground. He’s a good man.
Reeves designed the Mako Reactors. As head of Urban Development, his job was to craft a city around them. Kind of a soulless job. But he’s a gifted architect. Most of us who are good at we do don’t necessarily like it. But in order to put a personal, friendly stamp on what would be become a dump, he added a park. This park would be a place kids could play in safety. For the most part. Sure, terrorism leads to the destruction of parks. But the terrorism was Shinra’s, in response to AVALANCHE. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
Usually, what you make on company time becomes a product of the company itself. So that park in the middle of Sector 6? It’s property of Shinra. They can repurpose this structure for whatever they want. What do they use it as? Take a look at the Moogle’s head in the park.
Now take a look at the entrance to the Gold Saucer.
They look similar because they’re the same design. Of course, the Moogle head isn’t found in the park. But Reeves designed the Moogle Cait Sith rides upon. Dio, the Gold Saucer owner, took both designs and created a park. Why do I say Shinra repurposed the park? Because Shinra controls everything. Dio probably went to Shinra for the funding, and President Shinra allowed Dio to use the park in Sector 6.
