According to the Final Fantasy VII game manual, Sephiroth’s age is unknown. According to Sephiroth’s entry on the Final Fantasy Wikia, he’s:
Approximately 20 years old at the start of Crisis Core
Approximately 27 years old in Final Fantasy VII
This makes sense. Final Fantasy VII takes place seven years after Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. And Sephiroth sounds like an eighteen-year-old senior reflecting on his rebellious phase in Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII:
Sephiroth: When all the 2nd Class were away we would all go fool around: Genesis, Angeal and me.
But something really doesn’t sit right with me. We know Sephiroth is the offspring of both Hojo and Lucrecia. And Lucrecia was the unrequited love of Vincent Valentine when he was a Turk.
Vincent was born on October 13th, 1950. Twenty-seven years later, the year would be 1977. Vincent Valentine was a Turk “about twenty-five to thirty years before Final Fantasy VII”. Around this time, Lucrecia would have conceived Sephiroth. At the start of Final Fantasy VII, the year is 0007.
This would actually put Sephiroth in his 30s.
But I’m still skeptical about Sephiroth’s age. Thanks to the Final Fantasy VII remake, other games such as Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII may not be canon. If so, then Shinra Fan Clubs might not exist in the universe. Sephiroth’s fan club is the very elusive Silver Elite. You can join it, as Zack does, only after taking a quiz. When asking for more information about the fan club, the member states:
The Silver Elite is a prestigious fan club that was established more than twenty years ago. Only our chairwoman knows the details of its long history. She never shows herself in public, though. We only know her by her mail. I wonder what she’s like in person…
Well, that’s odd. Who knew fan clubs were such a tradition in Shinra? So then, who was the focus of this fan club? I understand the answer should be Sephiroth. But then again, he’s only around twenty years of age during the time of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII. Fan clubs revolve around those specific to SOLDIERS. So then…
Did Shinra, or even Hojo, set up a fan club for baby Sephiroth. Wait, she? Then, could Lucrecia have set up a Shinra Fan Club for her baby boy Sephiroth? And if it were her, when did she set up his fan club? For those who know the story of Lucrecia:
Due to the Jenova cells in her body, Lucrecia was unable to die and fled, ending up in the Crystal Cave where she and Grimoire had discovered Chaos.
Was he a SOLDIER as an infant, showing promise as a very gifted and talented child? Or is it that, maybe, he’s actually older than he’s letting on. But this can’t be true, as we’ve already checked the timeline and determined his time of conception. This is confusing. Perhaps the Final Fantasy VII remake will clear up many of the inconsistencies? Maybe the remake will remove details surrounding Shinra Fan Clubs altogether?
So what do you think?
