I wish Reks replaced Vaan in Final Fantasy XII. Look at him.
I think he’d be a fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! main protagonist.
But also, his story seems to have the pathos of a story. From what I remember about the story, one of the themes seems to be about choices. Balthier chooses to leave the Judges, Ashe and Vayne chooses power, Penelo chooses to be a dancer, etc. Here, Reks would confront someone who looks like the man who stabbed him. Reks would have to decide whether or not he could trust him.
Also, there’s his backstory:
Five years ago Reks lost his family to a plague. Only fourteen years old, he had to take care of his younger brother Vaan, with help from Penelo and her family. Always kind to others, he helped a seeq named Jovy who was wrongly accused of being a thief. He was known to love Galbana Lilies, a type of red desert flowers.
Three years after losing his parents, Reks joined the Order of the Knights of Dalmasca and fell under the command of Captain Basch, to whom Reks reminded of his own brother. Having been one of the few to survive the initial Archadian assault, he forms part of the detachment sent to stop King Raminas from signing Dalmasca’s unconditional surrender at Nalbina Fortress after rumors spread it is but a conspiracy to assassinate him.
Reks has a Ramza-esque presence. He’d like a soldier who struggles to do what’s right, even when what’s wrong is a charming alternative.
I think it’s somewhat clear in the game there was more to him. Yet Vaan replaced Reks. Maybe this is what peeved Matsuno into
creative differences health issues? But imagine Reks’ backstory, with Vaan’s story in the game (and some addendum).
Vaan and Penelo provided pathos and perspective to the main cast as observers. No reason Reks couldn’t have done this also. If Reks replaced Vaan and Penelo, maybe we could add a female Bangaa to make a six-party cast? They could also keep Penelo, and expand the cast to seven. Or eight members if they include a Seeq.
None of this came to materialize, however. Oh well, here’s to the Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age.
