You know what I really like about Final Fantasy IX? The diverse cast. Of course, this lends to the characters’ designs and skills (Freya’s a Dragoon in a Red Mage outfit). But it was also the Final Fantasy I’ve played with the most non-humans characters.
Sure, Final Fantasy VI had Umaro and Mog. Final Fantasy VII had Red XIII and Cait Sith. Final Fantasy X had Kimahri. And the Ivalice series had multiple races. But Final Fantasy IX had only two known playable humans: Steiner and Beatrix. All the rest were technically different species. And this made it interesting.
But I want a cast with no humans. I want to experience the true fantasy of different creatures with different cultures. Maybe a robot culture where all of their masters died off. Their culture would revolve around constant maintenance, a culture as efficient as possible. Not just the same old boring humans.
Sometimes I wish we had more character races in our Final Fantasy XII party. A Seeq, a Bangaa and a Moogle, some others to compliment the Viera.
Humans – if included – can be the villains. Wow, just the thought is a bit jarring to think of isn’t it? The thought that we’d relate to non-humans and the only ones related to our species would be the villain. It would get us to think of our place in this world, and how we interact with each other.
