…I’d never use Vaan or Penelo.
It’s true. I like Penelo. And Vaan is a flagship character. But Basch, Ashe, Fran, and Balthier are all I need.
They drive the story with great character arcs.
It’s not that Vaan and Penelo don’t add anything to the story. Vaan and Penelo are like foils to the other characters, helping them understand their motives. We also experience the story from their eyes. But, I wouldn’t miss them.
I wish the story began with Balthier and Fran walking around Rabanastre. They’d interact with the townspeople, right before breaking into the old Royal Palace. After meeting Ashe, we’d have the story progress as normal.
But I’m OK with Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age’s story.
Of course, making Final Fantasy XII a four-member party wouldn’t replace Vaan or Penelo in the story. It would match the original Final Fantasy. I would also see them as tag-along kids who take a back seat to the adults. Then again, this fits their actual role in the story.
If I have Basch, Ashe, and Balthier in a party, it’ll seem like Fran is actively babysitting them.
