Part of the reason Laguna’s love for Julia remains unrequited might be due to a Galbadian soldier. First, he has to report to the Presidential Residence. Then, the next time we control Laguna, he’s exploring the Centra Excavation Site. This mission is much farther away than Galbadia. A high ranking officer could have this power, and soldiers in red are higher up than those in blue. And of course, an officer in red uniform lurks near Julia’s hotel room…
Julia does eventually meet Fury Caraway, by the time we meet him a general. Perhaps, in about two decades prior, he sent Laguna away. Julia never heard from Laguna again, and Caraway consoled her during this time. They eventually fell in love. Yet, she died in a car crash, twelve years before.
Most women in Final Fantasy have high magical ability that the lore never explains, yet only hints. Julia, in a metaphorical sense, bewitches Laguna. Yet, her daughter Rinoa is able to inherit sorceress powers. How is this possible? Do sorceresses have to be related to those whom they give their powers? No. Edea and Ultimecia share no perceivable relations. They could be cousins, maybe even sisters. In this sense, the bond they share could be the conduit for control.
But Ultimecia’s bond with Rinoa is stronger. While Ultimecia controls Edea’s witch powers, Rinoa does not inherit any witch prior. This means she has natural latent witch powers. Plus, Ultimecia is able to heighten those powers. The amplification of Rinoa’s powers remains inexplicable for a person who never formally took a witch’s powers. What could account for this, as opposed to a biological connection? Is there a biological connection?
But what about Julia. She died when Rinoa was young. Dying in a car crash wouldn’t leave enough time to pass on her powers. Yet a sorceress cannot truly die until they give their powers away to someone else. We also know that females with magical powers can fling consciousness into both the past and the future. Perhaps Julia was able to travel several generations to the future. From there, she could have traveled to the past, becoming the menace everyone knew and hated.
Ultimecia and Julia have an interesting fashion sense. Both wearing red dresses isn’t enough to connect the two. However, each has their signature exposed leg. Why this style of dress? Probably to remind her of the love she never saw again, that one day performing her signature song. But this is all speculation, as you know…
Who is Ultimecia, really? She’s mysterious. We never really know.
