According to the Final Fantasy Wikia:
Ruby is a minor character in Final Fantasy IX. She works as one of Tantalus Theater Troupe‘s actors and is the only female of the group. She plays the lead heroine in Tantalus’s production of the famous play I Want to Be Your Canary.
She’s at the beginning of the game, with the Southern American English accent and the grey hair. You might think her hair is blue, that that’s actually her bandana. She’ll also storm into the room on the Tantalus’ ship if you choose ‘Queen Brahne’ 64 times when Baku asks Zidane who they’re to kidnap.
Don’t know why you’d want to answer ‘Queen Branhe’ 64 times though, but OK.
But why would Ruby, of all people, come out after hearing Queen Branhe? Even if it’s 64 times, why her, and not Baku? Could she have some type of connection with Queen Branhe?
That Ruby from FFIX is the real Princess Garnet
So this is what I think went down.
Ruby was born as Princess Garnet, but fell extremely ill when she was young. It appeared that she had passed away, and so she was laid out in somewhere quiet in the depths of the castle. However, she recovered, or was simply comatose, and woke up confused. She could have suffered from memory loss, due to the illness. She wandered off into the streets of Alexandria, where she was eventually found by Baku and taken into Tantalus.
So what happened at the castle when the Princess’s body went missing? The staff in charge would have tried to cover it up, perhaps wrapped up nothing more than a bundle of cloth and such for the funeral. When the Princess Garnet we know, or Sarah, turned up at the Alexandrian docks, it was far easier to cover up the fact that the real Princess’s body had gone missing.
So what brings me to this theory?
One, the names. Garnet and Ruby, two red coloured gemstones. Ruby is also one of the only members of Tantalus who hasn’t had their name taken from one of Lord Avon’s plays (another headcanon: Baku named the street kids he picked up after characters from Lord Avon’s plays).
Two, concept art of Ruby shows her with vaguely blue tinted skin. This is the art in question. This would make her and Brahne the only two blue skinned human looking characters in FFIX. Ruby would be paler because of her father’s genetics.
Three Ruby and Garnet don’t look alike as adults, but it’s possibly they looked similar to one another as children. A lot of small children do tend to look alike when they’re very young. As adults they don’t look extremely different, colouring aside. They both share a similar figure, and are pretty.
So yeah, that’s my very far fetched theory!
Farfetched? Sure. It’s restated here:
So a small fan theory I had was regarding Garnet from Final Fantasy IX. There are going to be massive Final Fantasy IX spoilers in this comment, so if you’ve not completed the game and don’t want to be spoiled, I suggest you turn away now.
Garnet is not biologically related to Queen Brahne. She arrived shortly after the real Princess Garnet died as a young child. Because of her astonishing resemblance to the deceased Princess, asides from her summoner’s horn, both Queen Brahne, and her husband agreed to take her in as a replacement.
So we know our Garnet looked like the real Garnet. However, the issue arises when it comes to the fact that neither Garnet looks nothing like Queen Brahne. You could argue that she took more after her ‘father’, but it seems downright odd that the real Garnet would have none of her mother’s features.
It’s not even a look or size issue, Garnet and Brahne look as if they’re two completely different species. And technically they are, but the point remains that our Garnet looks like the real Garnet did.
My theory? Brahne’s species happens to look more human-like when they’re younger, and then change as they get older. The real Garnet may have looked like our Garnet when she was very young but had she lived, she would have eventually changed to look more like her mother.
Children around that age (given the flashbacks, I’m guessing Garnet was only four or five when she arrived at Alexandria) also have a habit of looking similar to one another. Two dark haired and dark eyed girls would naturally look quite similar at such a young age, even if they were different species.
It’s all a pretty interesting theory and would make a great fan fiction.
Now, Ruby and Queen Brahne aren’t the only characters in Final Fantasy IX with blue skin. Amarant has blue skin too.
But if Queen Brahne looks like this, what will Ruby look like when she gets older?
What do you think?
