Thanks to Liz Shepherd of TheGamers for the inspiration!
So this theory has been around for a while, especially since Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII brought forth more information on Vincent Valentine and his backstory. In the game, Lucrecia Crescent, Vincent’s love interest, ends up marrying crazy scientist Hojo, leading to the birth of Sephiroth. Which we all know as the One-Winged Angel with a rocking cool theme song, beautiful hair, and a ridiculously long sword.
However, some believe that Lucrecia and Vincent had a brief relationship before the wedding, leading to Sephiroth’s conception. As much as I love the idea of Vincent and Lucrecia being together, there’s too much canonical evidence confirming that Hojo is Sephiroth’s dad. I mean, who wouldn’t want someone as awesome as Vincent to be their father? I’d take him over the crazy lunatic any day.
Unrequited love is a recurring theme in Final Fantasy:
- Edge has Rydia
- Kain has Rosa
- Terra and (arguably) General Leo
- Laguna and Juila
- Eiko and Zidane
- Freya and Sir Fratley
Vincent has Lucrecia. Vincent’s background in Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII gives more insight into his “dark and brooding over his past experiences” and his “sins”. The “sin” was letting Professor Hojo take Lucrecia away from him. Lucrecia’s sin was neglecting Vincent for the mad scientist.
Liz is correct; we have canonical evidence confirming Hojo as Sephiroth’s father. Still, I can see why some fans believe Vincent is Sephiroth’s father. I can see Lucrecia’s face in Sephiroth, of course as her being his real mother. But Sephiroth has a few traits from Vincent too. While Hojo has long hair, you could argue that Sephiroth gets his silky smooth bangs from Vincent’s. The Jenova cells would explain why his hair is grey…and shiny.
Plus, Vincent’s sins would be greater if he were the father of Sephiroth. Think of the massive guilt Vincent would feel knowing he fathered Gaia’s greatest enemy, through an adulterous relationship. Maybe this will actually be a secret plot twist to the Final Fantasy VII remake?
Of course, we can’t really tell who the father is just by looking at facial features.
