I really wanted this game to come out. But I just don’t think they are going about this in the correct way.
With the Playstation 5’s advent, I think it would have been awesome for them to wait another year or two until they hashed out a complete edition of Final Fantasy VII for that console.
Instead, it seems like Square Enix is taking the micro-transaction/DLC/Early Access route, release installments incrementally, then rake in all the money each time with a new collector’s edition. They did this with Final Fantasy XV. Then, for the Playstation 5, we will get the entire series on one disc, for the price of one of the games.
So then, should you wait? Well, if no one buys a segment of the game, Square Enix won’t sell segments a game anymore. If people buy segments of a game, they will see each segment as something people want. They will then continue to push out half finished games, selling you the rest of the story later. Just like they did with Final Fantasy XV.
Final Fantasy VII Remake won’t sell zero copies. It will probably sell well, but break even much later down the line than Final Fantasy XV did. They may or may not cancel the project on that alone.
Hopefully then, Square Enix would ask fans of the series, “hey why didn’t you buy Final Fantasy II Remake? Didn’t you want this?” And then our voice will be heard. If you buy anything with Final Fantasy on the title, you get products like Final Fantasy VII Remake.
