Spellblade is quite similar to Junctioning:
Spellblade (魔法剣 / まほうけん, Mahōken?), also known as MgcSwrd, Magic Blade, Sword Magic, Magic Sword, and Swd Mag, is a recurring command ability, usually associated with the Mystic Knight class. It allows characters to cast spells to their weapons in order to give physical attacks elemental, status, and other properties.
The only difference is that you’re not casting spells to your weapons, you’re Junctioning them:
The Junction system allows the user to replicate the powers of a sorceress via the storage and control of magical powers and Guardian Forces. The system can store 32 different forms of Para-Magic with a stock of 100 units of each form. The system acts as a type of filter, filtering out magic (known as drawing) from a being or entity and storing it ready to be used or junctioned by the user. This allows the user to possess near superhuman abilities, such as increased speed and strength, as well as being able to use magic. Various Junction systems are seen in wide use in the military forces.
And then there’s this:
Status-attack effectiveness is calculated by the following formula:
- If (StatusDefense >= 200) Target doesn’t get the status
- else: Infliction% = AttackerStr / 4 – TargetVit / 4
- Infliction% = Infliction% – StatusDefense + StatusAttack
- StatusDefense and StatusAttack start at 100 (0%).
When an elemental spell is junctioned to Elem-Atk, the character can deal bonus damage (see here).
There are more examples, from Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy Tactics. Yet they’re all different from each other, because Final Fantasy likes to reinvent themselves.
