Thanks to Matttard for the inspiration here and here!
Final Fantasy IV has a slight love triangle between Cecil, Kain, and Rosa. By the way, Final Fantasy IV unfolds, you’d think Kain was jealous of Cecil for his relationship with Rosa. But according to Matttard:
Kain was jealous of Rosa, not Cecil.
I always thought that if Kain quote-unquote “loved” Rosa, he wouldn’t have thrown her at Golbez or left her to die by Barbariccia’s hands.
It’s all about that bromance.
Same applies to Seifer-Rinoa-Squall.
and here:
I said this last time and I’ll say it again 😀
Kain was in love with Cecil, not Rosa.
I always thought that if Kain quote-unquote “loved” Rosa, he wouldn’t have thrown her at Golbez or left her to die by Barbariccia’s hands.
It’s all about that bromance.
Cecil and Kain are very close friends, but of course, this is not true:
Kain (to Rosa): Forgive me, Rosa… not all I’ve done was because of Golbez’s spell. I just wanted to… I just wanted to keep you by my side.
Kain professes his love for Rosa.
Or does he? Perhaps it was a cover, to keep himself from admitting the awkward truth that he is in love with Cecil. How could anyone understand his bromance with Cecil? By keeping her by his side, Kain would effectively keep Rosa from Cecil. And Kain’s ultimate plan was to kill Rosa to keep him away from Cecil for good.
In this sense, Kain was a yandere:
On the outside, a yandere is often a normal girl: happy, social, and usually well liked. But love makes her crazy—often violently so. Fear is at the core of a yandere: the fear that someone (usually another girl) will take the one she loves. To prevent this, she is willing to do anything—including kidnapping and murder.
Mattard’s believes Kain “wouldn’t have thrown (Rosa) at Golbez or left her to die by Barbariccia’s hands”. But consider that there are two types of yanderes:
There are generally two types of yanderes, obsessive and possessive. Obsessives will kill anyone and everyone who stands in the way of them having their “true loves.” Possessives will go one step further and even kill the ones they love so that they won’t end up with anyone else.
Matttard also believes this applies to the Seifer-Rinoa-Squall triangle.
