I hear demands of a male white mage. Is the request feasible? Maybe.
It would be interesting. I don’t remember a white mage being the focus of any games, let alone the main character AND male. Yuna was close, as a summoner with healing abilities. But even then by Final Fantasy X-2 she was a gunner in need of a new wardrobe.
Other than that, I guess Cecil as a Paladin might count.
But holy cow, would it work! Minwu from Final Fantasy II was a white mage. He was powerful early game too. He could hit hard with a mage and a staff. It makes me wonder if a white mage would be similar to Cloud, someone pretending to be tough while being a softie deep down inside.
Of course, this is also why we may never be a male white mage in any Final Fantasy. Remember what happened when they added a bard? True, they redeemed Edward in Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. But it took over a decade, a sequel and script changes to do it.
Otherwise, people see white mages as “womanly” and “feminine”. What can I say? Japan is still a very traditional – conservative even. The mindset suggests women are nurturers by nature. This is why in every single Final Fantasy, white mages were usually women. Even the original Final Fantasy retconned the androgynous white mage to be female. And that was mostly due to player perception…
But here in the West, we think the same way sometimes. It’s a bad habit, but we do.
Still, Final Fantasy is about breaking boundaries and stereotypes, so who knows?
Here’s to a male white mage Agni’s love interest in Final Fantasy XVI!
