Eventually… all humans die. What happens to them after they die?
The body decomposes and returns to the Planet. That much everyone knows. What about their consciousness, their hearts, and their souls?
The soul too returns to the Planet.
And not only those of humans but everything on this Planet. In fact, all living things in the universe, are the same.
The spirits that return to the Planet, merge with one another and roam the Planet.
They roam, converge, and divide, becoming a swell, called the ‘Lifestream’.
Lifestream… In other words, a path of the energy of the souls roaming the Planet.
‘Spirit Energy’ is a word that you should never forget.
A new life… children are blessed with Spirit energy and are brought into the world.
Then, the time comes when they die and once again return to the Planet…
Of course, there are exceptions, but this is the way of the world.
I’ve digressed, but you’ll understand better if you watch this.Spirit energy makes all things possible, trees, birds, and humans.
Not just living things. But spirit energy makes it possible for Planets to be Planets.
What happens if that energy were to disappear? When Spirit energy is forcefully extracted, and manufactured, it can’t accomplish its true purpose.Everyday Mako reactors suck up Spirit energy, diminishing it.
Spirit energy gets compressed in the reactors and processed into Mako energy. All living things are being used up and thrown away.
In other words, Mako energy will only destroy the Planet…
However, it’s not quite clear how Shinra diminishes the Lifestream. When we max out a Materia’s level, we create a new Materia. We can do this each time, giving birth to a new Materia each time. Materia is the coalesce of Mako and thus apart of the Lifestream, the Lifeblood of the Planet. It’s not clear how crystallized Materia gives birth to other Materia, but the planet’s Lifeblood doesn’t diminish. Even if every new Materia birthed were to take from the Lifestream, it wouldn’t be enough to siphon Gaia completely. The only way for the Lifestream to diminish is for people to stop procreating.
However, as Sephiroth explains:
The knowledge and wisdom of the Ancients are held in the Materia. Anyone with this knowledge can freely use the powers of the Land and the Planet. That knowledge interacts between ourselves and the planet calling up magic… or so they say.
In this sense, Materia actually preserves the memories of the Planet.
But when a person dies, they absolve into the Lifestream, eventually losing all of their memories. In this sense, the Lifestream is functionally similar to the Void. The Lifestream is ‘nothingness’. You aren’t an individual in the Lifestream, you become apart of the collective consciousness of the Lifestream. All people in the Lifestream lose their personal identity. Their spirit must reincarnate before Spiritual energy can give matter new mortal life.
Of course, we don’t know when the annihilation process officially begins. Under a decade, both Aerith and Zack exist in their original forms. We can see them in Advent Children: Final Fantasy VII.
