First, let’s look at Sephiroth’s most obvious parallel to Jesus Christ:
Sephiroth considering Jenova to be his mother, yet also being implied to have become one with her, may allude to the Christian belief of Jesus Christ being the Son of God, yet also being one and the same with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit via the blessed trinity.
And Jenovah’s most obvious parallel to the Mother Mary:
Sephiroth being Jenova’s “son,” as well as the implication throughout Final Fantasy VII that he had become one and the same as her, may refer to the Christian belief that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, yet also via the blessed trinity one and the same with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit.
Now let’s look at the life and times of Jesus in the Gospels, and compare and contrast them to Sephiroth’s from the game:
|Jesus in the Synoptic Gospels||Jesus in the Gospel of John||Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII|
|Begins with Jesus’ baptism or birth to a virgin.||Begins with creation, with no birth story.||Sephiroth is implanted with Jenova Cells.|
|Baptized by John the Baptist.||Baptism presupposed but not mentioned.||Baptized in a research tank.|
|Teaches in parables and aphorisms.||Teaches in long, involved discourses.||Teaches in cryptic messages.|
|Teaches primarily about the Kingdom of God, little about himself.||Teaches primarily and extensively about himself.||Talks primarily about himself and extensively about his mother.|
|Speaks up for the poor and oppressed.||Does not exorcise demons.||Kills clones.|
|Public ministry lasts one year.||Public ministry lasts three years.||Hibernates in the Northern Cave for five years.|
|Cleansing the Temple occurs late.||Cleansing the Temple is early.||Raiding the Temple of the Ancients occurs during the middle of the game.|
|Jesus ushers in a new covenant with a last supper.||Jesus washes the disciples’ feet.||Sephiroth summons meteor.|
|Dies on cross.||Dies on cross.Fidelity||Will never become a memory.|
And to top it off, Sephiroth is resurrected in Advent Children: Final Fantasy VII…
