Every mainline Final Fantasy game has a happy ending. At the end of every Final Fantasy game, we tend to think the lead male and female protagonist stay together. But when you consider the circumstances that brought them together, I can’t help but doubt their relationships.
I think we can rule out Final Fantasy I, II, and III. Sure, White Mage could be in a relationship with the Warrior (of Light). Firion and Maria could have feelings for each other. And Ingus and Princess Serah could have something going on. But the cast of Final Fantasy III might need to grow up a bit before we start talking about relationships). Yet, it’s not clear.
But most of Final Fantasy romances end in unrequited love. Rydia never returns the love that Edge gave to her. Bartz is in a harem that never really materializes. Terra might have loved General Leo, but he died at the hands of Kefka. Locke and Celes…well, as long as he gets over his neuroticism it might work, but he still pines over Rachel.
Zack dies before Aerith and he could start anything. And Aerith dies before she confesses her love to his replacement. Tifa desperately wants to make it work with Cloud. But she fell in love with a lie and her false idea of the ex-SOLDIER. Cloud doesn’t really know who he is at this point. What does he really want?
Other relationships just seem to be flippant. Squall and Rinoa (and Irvine and Selphie for that matter) are just stupid teenagers. C’mon. They’ll probably break up and date each other.
Zidane, ladies man, and resident pervert, kind of just moves on from girl to girl. I don’t think he’ll stick around long enough. He spent a year away from Garnet, who knows what type of (failed) romances he had since then. He’s an adventurer at heart; can’t chain the man down.
Tidus just kinda fades out of the picture. He and Yuna reunite, but she’s been learning to live without him. Does she really need him? They met only to cheer each other up anyways, as they were in a bad period in their lives. What if they’ve moved beyond that time?
Vaan and Penelo?
Vaan “friend zones” Penelo since he’s still too childish to “get it”. But Penelo friend zones Vaan early in the game. She nags him about Migelo while she flirts with random guys on the street. Clearly, they’re children unequipped to have a serious relationship.
– snort –
Fran and Balthier might make it work, just as long as they keep the relationship exciting as sky pirates…
Fang and Vanille seem like they’ll have a violent breakup true love lasts forever…jk they’re like siblings. Snow keeps running off without Serah because he’s an idiot. And sorry, Hope is never old enough for Lightning (the crazy cat lady). She’s walking to my house at the end of Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII anyways, remember? She hasn’t arrived at my countryside villa yet. I’m still waiting.
This might be different when it comes to Cecil and Rosa and Wakka and Lulu. The latter both have children through marriage…although I’m sure Lulu sees Chappu when she sees Wakka (obviously her second choice).
Noctis and Luna might last as well. But, for certain reasons, we can’t say that their relationship really ever materializes either. Poor Iris is too young, and Aranea is “too old” (Japanese standards)
but not for each other! god, I gotta stop doing that.
