When we start Final Fantasy VII, Shinra is the clear antagonist to the planet. Shrina by nature was the greedy, oppressive corporation who worked under the guise of technological progress. But when we leave Midgar, it becomes clear that Sephiroth is the greatest threat to the planet. Sephiroth by nature is the shrewd and haughty swordsman, who came to the mistaken conclusion that he was of a chosen race.
But the real threat to humans IS the planet, namely nature itself, once it becomes clear that humans are a threat to the planet.
Our characters fight monsters engineered by Professor Hojo. They also fight against themselves, and the true motivations behind what they do. Throughout the game, we know something’s off about how Cloud acts. Everyone else in our party can sense that too. Cloud struggles with knowing himself, and what he’s capable of.
I know this is an equivocation of the word ‘nature’, but I think this is the point Final Fantasy VII was trying to make as well. Shinra changed the nature of both the planet and technology. Jenova used its nature to deceive others. AVALANCHE struggled to protect nature, even though they were a destructive force by nature. Cloud’s nature wasn’t what it seemed to be.
