Twincast (ふたりがけ, Futarigake?), also known as Twin, is an ability in Final Fantasy IV. The trademark skill of Palom and Porom, it allows two casters to execute powerful attacks by combining their powers. It has also been able to be used by other characters with a strong bond by combining powers.
And despite them being at odds, Palom and Porom have a strong bond as brother and sister. Yet personality-wise, they couldn’t be any more different. According to Final Fantasy IV’s game description, Palom is:
An apprentice Black Mage from the land of Mysidia. Though young, Palom has proven himself a skillful, if arrogant, a student of magic…
While Porom is:
An apprentice White Mage from the land of Mysidia. Mature for her age, Porom is already an accomplished spellcaster…
In a sense, they illustrate the Yin and Yang, “dark-bright”, “negative-positive”, the masculine and the feminine. They express the truth that seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent. But you know what they say: opposites attract.
Near the end of the game:
Porom arrives at her magic class without Palom, and goes off to look for him. She finds him flirting with a girl, and scolds him and brings him back to the Elder, who gives Palom twice as much homework to do.
Palom cuts his magic classes to flirt with a girl boasting about his exploits, specifically, the time he extinguished the fire on Mount Ordeals. Porom finds Palom and brings him before the Elder, who scolds him and gives him extra homework.
You could say that Porom only cares about Palom’s studies, but she might also be jealous of the girls he’s around. Palom is the flirty type already, but due to his overbearing sister can’t seem to strike a connection with another girl…
Twins aren’t supposed to be attracted to each other. “The Westermarck effect, or reverse sexual imprinting, is a hypothetical psychological effect through which people who live in close domestic proximity during the first few years of their lives become desensitized to sexual attraction.” This is hypothetical. And it’s not unlikely that they explored their magical abilities to their fullest.
Studies exist on sibling incest:
While a taboo topic in many cultures, sexual contact between siblings can be part of normal childhood curiosity and development. According to Cavanagh, Johnson & Friend (1995), between forty and seventy-five percent of children will engage in some sort of sexual behavior before reaching 13 years of age. In these situations, children are exploring each other’s bodies while also exploring gender roles and behaviors, and their sexual experimentation does not indicate that these children are child sex offenders. As siblings are generally close in age and locational proximity, it stands to reason that the opportunity for sexual exploration between siblings is fairly high – and that, if simply based on mutual curiosity, then these activities are not harmful or distressing, either in childhood or later in adulthood (Borgis, 2002).
And incest between twins is a common feature in Japanese mythology.
Perhaps they put this all behind them. It’s not uncommon for twins to want to establish their identities apart from each other. Porom desires to take over active leadership with Mysidia. Palom sets out to be an accomplished Sage like his idol Tellah. They desire to come into their own, without always relying on each other. But part of who they are happens to be them – together – as a whole. Consider the fact that they’re now adults, 22 years of age. Also consider that in The After Years, they spent time traveling together. Palom and Porom sailed together to travel the world like Tellah, in an attempt for the former to become a Sage.
And that it might have been a long journey, being enclosed on a ship that rocks back and forth. It’s possible that there was a lot of turbulence in the sea. Porom might have rushed over to Palom room to be comforted that the ship wouldn’t sink at sea. He might have assured her they weren’t going down. They may have held each other closely during this time. I think they believed being close to each other felt good. Too good. To enhance the mood, they each used magic. Fire from Palom, and Cure of Porom, to make a burning/healing sensation.
They kept caressing each other getting closer. Porom snuggled under Palom’s chin. Palom kissed her forehead. After years of frustration from not realizing any flirtations, Palom’s kiss might have lasted longer than intended. And then she kissed his neck. Afterward, slowly, their lips met. They stopped and looked into each other’s eyes, knowing that they might do something they shouldn’t. They came a little bit closer and Porom got scared.
She said “You’re moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-air”
I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
License plate said “fresh” and had a dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought nah, forget it, yo homes to Bel-air!
I pulled up to a house about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabby “Yo, homes smell you later!”
Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-air
…I’m kidding, guys. Incest is gross.
