Shelke Rui might actually be one of the creepiest characters in Final Fantasy history. She’s supposedly nineteen years old. But then why does she still act like an angsty emo teenager? She’s a pale, emo teenager with red hair that suffers from isolation and mental scars. Of course, she’s moodier than Squall and has real identifying problems. But she doesn’t seem real.
Shelke’s a shell. She’s devoid of emotion, and it’s cringe-inducing. You could say that she’s emotionally-stunted, which is creepy in itself. Of course, once you know her backstory, you understand way. But it’s also not just because she thinks and speaks like a computer. It’s that she’s just acting to fulfill a role.
It’s due to her character design. Why does she look like a child? Shelke is nineteen years old, however, she looks ten. Only, not quite. Maybe her body is that of a ten-year-old, but her face is stylized like a young human. So then, when looking at her you get this unsettling feeling that somethings not right. It’s odd to see a girl with an adult shaped head, and adult features, on a ten-year-old body.
Then you have her feet. She’s ten years old and already wears size 10 in Men’s.
One of the weirdest things I’ve seen in Final Fantasy is justifying her age. Why would they create a character who’s permanently stuck in a young girls’ body? And why would they have her wear a tight, form-fitting uniform? A uniform that looks like an extra costume from the X-Men? It’s strange to see it in a Final Fantasy game.
Maybe her uniform helps her with mobility. She’s really fast and moves like a spider on cocaine. But the way she glides towards you without moving her legs is nightmarish.
Second as her EM sabers nunchaku. If you played Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII you can hear the sound of a Lightsabers. Lightsabers, in my Final Fantasy? Seeing that many Final Fantasy games take inspiration from Star Wars, it’s more common than you think. But this is a Final Fantasy VII game. That’s the last place you’d expect to see them, from a game where SOLDIERs wield swords.
Everything about Shelke is creepy and uncanny. She’s still cool, and it would be great to see her in another game.
