Thanks to Masusenpai for the inspiration!
“What are your controversial Final Fantasy opinions?”
Well, considering how excited everyone has been since its announcement, suggesting they shouldn’t remake Final Fantasy VII sounds like heresy.
But is it? I don’t think so and to each, their own, and I wanted to know the reasoning behind this opinion…
Masusenpai: They shouldn’t remake FF7.
GaryGrayII: Really? But why not?
Masusenpai: Yes Gary. However I do understand the desire for a remake as the originals more obvious flaws are the awkward transition graphics and poor translation; both of which would be remedied with a remake.
1. Square wont be faithful to the original work. In some ways they couldn’t be faithful even if they wanted to and other ways they will choose not to be faithful.
2. I’d rather Square focus their resources into new work. It has been a long time since I’ve truly enjoyed a Final Fantasy title. They used to be A+ titles but more recently they have been C+ to B level. I’d be happier with them making new entries as good as possible.
GaryGrayII: Well, to you’re first point, they probably won’t keep the game exactly the way it way. They’re bound to add extras. But we don’t know if that’ll be a good thing or not. Look at the DS remakes for Final Fantasy III and IV. I think they improved on Final Fantasy III, while with Final Fantasy IV they
I think that with the new sales from Final Fantasy VIII Remake, Square Enix will be able to add more Business Divisions, more team members, and pump out newer games. It takes time, and I’m sure they’ll have Final Fantasy XVI in short order.
Masusenpai: I’m certainly not asking them to keep the game exactly the same either. There is a balance to maintain. The best remake IMO is Resident Evil for the gamecube. It kept the spirit of the original while giving a new experience for veteran fans.
Are they remaking FF8 as well?! You probably meant 7? That is assuming that the sales are good. As it is right now, it may be that the FF7 remake just gets stuck in development Hell for all time. I think the first teaser trailer came out in 2015 and there has been almost nothing since then? Could be the next KH3 lol.
GaryGrayII: LOL, yeah you’re right, I meant Final Fantasy VII. But there’s a rumor for Final Fantasy VIII’s remake, and I’m hoping for it (crossing my fingers).
Masusenpai: The updates to 7 seem obvious, but what would you want changed in a FF8 remake?
GaryGrayII: Not very much. What would you want changed?
Masusenpai: I don’t see any reason to remake it honestly.
GaryGrayII: Well, to each their own. I’m looking forward to seeing Squall in 4k if possible 🙂
I think that we’ve come to the conclusion that we’re two kinds of Final Fantasy fans, both who have a place in this community. One type of fan, like me, may even (stupidly sometimes) look forward to anything Square Enix puts out. We Final Fantasy nerd types are so gullible 😛 The other type of fan is skeptical. They’ve been let down before, and do they really want to put themselves out there again?
Now keep in mind, I’m not trying to call out Masusenpai. We’re all entitled to our opinions. I’m personally excited to see the Final Fantasy VII remake, but I can understand why Masusenpai, and others, are wary (and weary) of Square Enix remaking nostalgic games.
In fact, Masusenpai has a really good point. Square Enix hasn’t always had the best reputation when remaking games, and Final Fantasy VII is a really big title – one of the best. The hype surrounding the title is as long and high as fan demand: for over 20 years. We’ve all been waiting for it, and Square Enix has ONE chance to get it right. Can they do it? What if they can’t?
But some people are hopeful for the Final Fantasy VII remake for other reasons:
tokinmuskokan: If they focused as much on writing a very captivating story with awesome gameplay as they are on the FF7RM, we’d be sitting here a year(?) from now playing FF16.
I hope so too!
