What will the remake look like? I think we all think we know, based on what we’ve read.
Even worst, we let our imagination run wild. Maybe even get the best of us. Everyone thought of “episodes”, and then changed to parts. These words aren’t interchangeable. No one really knows. We’re all just speculating and hoping that Square Enix validates our guesses.
I think we know that the Remake is going to be a series of full games. What is the nature of these full games? Full 40-hour story driven games like Final Fantasy VII? Full 20-hour story games like Final Fantasy XV? Full character episodes Gladio, Prompto, and Ignis?

We need to consider several factors.
First, what they say could be intentionally lost-in-translation to keep up guessing. Guessing is hype and hype sells. Second, Square Enix hides information. Yep. If you haven’t learned your lesson from Tabata’s “I meant to do that” statement, consider the bigger picture. They save face. They hide information relating to their IP. They’re a business. Businesses will do this if they think it’ll increase profits. That’s what businesses do.
This means we have to read between the lines. We need to rely on what might be likely for inspiration. So what could it be?
Perhaps it’ll be episodic, like Final Fantasy IV: The After Years. Like Final Fantasy XV, the episodes were character-centric? Makes sense. But Final Fantasy VII doesn’t quite have that type of structure. Maybe they’re going to change the game so that it reflects an episodic nature based on characters?
Yay.
News outlets did then interpret episodes to mean “parts”, right? Maybe it will be multipart, as in the Final Fantasy XIII Trilogy. There’s enough there, right? We have a prequel and two sequels. But considering we have screenshots for Final Fantasy VII, they wouldn’t release them in order, right? We wouldn’t get:
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII,
- then Final Fantasy VII,
- and then Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII
?
But perhaps the parts will break down the original game at certain events. Why do people think this? Because Nomura talked about how everything they wanted to do wouldn’t be able to fit in one game. So then, people naturally thought “oh, Episode Midgar”.

How can we forget that they’ve made Altissia in Final Fantasy XV? So they don’t necessarily need a full game to pack in stuff for a full city. Will each section relate to the discs? This can’t be it right. The last disc doesn’t contain much new content. And why are we assuming that the game will be three parts? Simply because that’s how Westerners tell stories?
Maybe we’ll actually get the full game, the way we always expected. Maybe the DLC will be episodic?
