When Zell and Irvine arrive at Squall’s cell, they find Squall’s body. Before they can call the others, Biggs and Wedges arrive. Both don’t notice Squall’s dopey grin and sunglasses, concealing his lifeless state.
Wanting to enjoy Squall’s Seed salary, Zell proposes he and Irvine maintain the illusion that Squall’s still alive. Irvine finds this notion absurd. Only the arrival of Irvine’s office crush, Selphie Tilmitt, convinces him to go along with Zell’s plan.
Rinoa arrives at the cell and has Zell and Irvine direct her to Squall. There, she also fails to realize he’s dead. At that moment, Seifer witnesses the two of them apparently making love. Fooled into thinking Squall’s assassination failed, Seifer notifies Edea. An appalled Irvine discovers Zell furthering the illusion of Squall being alive by manipulating his body’s limbs.
Irvine attempts to call Balamb but instead activates the phone message detailing Squall’s plot against them. Aware of the circumstances of Squall’s death, they believe they’re still the targets of Edea. They decide to use Squall’s corpse as a prop for protection. Irvine and Zell make various attempts to leave D-District prison but they repeatedly misplace and recover Squall’s body. Finally, Zell and Irvine return to Balamb Gardens. Meanwhile, Edea, unhinged at her apparent failure to kill Squall, returns to the Orphanage.

SeeD eventually arrive and place Seifer under arrest. Seifer, lead away in a straitjacket, continues to insist Squall is still alive.
Garden students load Squall’s body into an ambulance. However, his gurney rolls away and topples off the boardwalk. Squall dumps right behind Irvine, Zell, and Quistis, who run away after noticing him. Eventually, Angelo starts to “play” with Squall, scooping buckets of sand over his dead body…
