Thanks to TriumphantBass for the inspiration.
A while back ago,
I asked this question on Reddit:
Balamb Garden is a major location in Final Fantasy VIII, situated east of the town of Balamb. Students (usually orphans) attend school in hopes of becoming SeeDs. Balamb Garden is one of the three Gardens in the world.
Akademeia (魔導院ペリシティリウム朱雀, Madōin Perishitiriumu Suzaku?, lit. Magic Academy Peristylium Suzaku) is a major location in Final Fantasy Type-0 and Final Fantasy Agito. It is the capital of the Dominion of Rubrum, and serves as an academy for training Agito Cadets and the place of the Vermilion Peristylium that houses the Vermilion Bird Crystal.
Balamb Gardens and Akademia aren’t high schools where the students just happen to study the art of war (despite how they’re presented); they’re military bases/installations. They shelter military equipment and personnel and facilitates training and operations. They provide accommodations for one or more units, but it may also be used as a command center, a training ground, or a proving ground.
So if you had to choose…?
Maybe it has to do something with anime. Balamb Gardens and Akademia both share similarities of the Japanese high school tropes. Otherwise, each school trains teenagers to become powerful soldiers/magic wielders.
But TriumphantBass believes the schools are the same:
I like to think Type-0 and VIII are tied together similar to the way that Bioshock Infinite and Bioshock 1 are.
Both Time Compression in VIII and the time loop in Type-0 evoke the endgame of Infinite for me. I like to think the two are very close parallel universes, with a few of the variables changed.
Akademia could very well be a Garden in another world, and its cadet’s SeeDs. Eidolons in Type-0 are somewhat frowned upon by society; they come with the great price of the summoner’s life, but they are still in use because of the immense power they grant. Likewise, Guardian Forces are protested in VIII because of their latent effects to their users, including memory loss, but Balamb Garden still allows their use because of their immense power. The memory loss also ties back into Type-0, where people are unable to retain memories of the fallen.
Dr. Arecia is the arch-sorceress of Akademia, and Class Zero endearingly refer to her as “Mother”, much like the party of VIII and their beloved “Matron”, sorceress Edea.
There are a lot more ties between the two, but those are the big ones for me.
That FF8s time compression not only compressed Squalls world but every world.
This would imply every world to be in the same timeline. Maybe then the institution of one evolved into the other. In this sense, you wouldn’t have to choose the school, but more so the timeline.
But what TriumphantBass suggests is a scenario in which one institution is an alternate reality of the other. Both students suffer from memory loss. The students of Balamb Garden lose their memories with each use of junctioning. The students of Akademia lose their memories when a comrade dies. Eidolons and GFs are both Espers, which cause their memory loss. Yet, the scenario surrounding them are different.
So what do you think?
