Did you know that you can acquire Vincent’s Weapon, Peacemaker before you get Vincent? It’s in the house beside the stairs- up the spiral staircase in Kalm. This is the only weapon you can acquire before the character joins your party. So then who was Vincent going to be?
According to the Final Fantasy VII Ultimania Omega Vincent’s character changed several times during development, from horror researcher to chemist to detective, and finally to a former member of the Turks.
A detective? That explains the revolver gun model.
In another early draft, Vincent was a detective working on supernatural cases, most of them bogus. His last job was investigating Shinra’s secrets to expose them to the world for the benefit of a rival company. Vincent’s relationship with Hojo would have gone back to the Midgar University medical department, and then the Shinra Research Lab. Using leverage with Hojo’s assistant, Lucrecia, Vincent delved deeper into Hojo’s work. Hojo captured Lucrecia and used her as part of the Jenova Project, and Vincent tried to rescue her, but Hojo puts him to sleep for thirty years.
Detective Joe Valentine.
Vincent probably would have awoken not knowing anything about who he was or what he was doing. He knew he was hot on the trail of Jenova. Somehow AVALANCHE had the key to it all. Vincent’s flashbacks to his original past allude to Cloud character development. Vincent probably would have looked for Edea, a sorceress who might have previously gone by the name “Lucrecia”. And this would have all taken place in New York City.
But we know what really happened. From these ideas, we got the final draft of
- Final Fantasy VII
- Final Fantasy VIII
- Parasite Eve
- Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within (New York City reference)
Kitase and Sakaguchi wrote out the detective plot. Maybe it didn’t make made much sense. Vincent knew about certain things he shouldn’t have, such as Cloud not being SOLDIER, Nibelheim burning down, etc..
And Vincent would have ruined a lot of the plot because he would have known a lot of the details.
So we got the Vincent Valentine and the Cloud Strife we know today: Turk and SOLDIER.
