I had this idea about how the media lies to us, presenting narratives as “fact”. I immediately thought about Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions. So I searched for a much information I could about the true “true” story behind the War of the Lions. I found a lot of good theories fill in the detail of my own I think the Arazlam Durai in (historian of Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions) changed history to suit his ulterior motives. First, who is Arazlam (Alazlam) Durai:
A modern-day scholar of medieval Ivalician history. Arazlam is also well known as an archaeologist and theologian, and many recall the controversy sparked by his interpretation of the Durai Papers. He has penned such classic works as “The Enigmatic War of the Lions”, “The True Saint Ajora”, and “The Durai Papers: 400 Years of Truth”.
The game mentions him as a minor character. Yet, his words are in fact the setting for the entire story of Final Fantasy Tactics! So how trustworthy is he? Take a look at his works:
- “The Enigmatic War of the Lions”
- “The True Saint Ajora”
- “The Durai Papers: 400 Years of Truth”
These all sound like very controversial works which all have a consistent heretical streak for a theologian. We can only assume “The True Saint Ajora” is based on a historical analysis of the Germonique Scriptures. According to the Germonique Scriptures, Saint Ajora wasn’t who everyone thought. But Ajora and the Lucavis were the main reason for the Glabados Church’s corruption. Perhaps Arazlam found it necessary to break from tradition…
His other two works touch upon the political conflict brings Delita to power. But Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions is directly based on “The Durai Papers: 400 Years of Truth”. He (and the game) begins innocuously. His interpretation of the truth:
I am Alazlam, a scholar of ancient Ivalice history…Have you ever heard of the “Lion War”? It divided Ivalice in two over who would be the successor to the throne. It ended with the appearance of a young hero named Delita. Everybody living here knows this hero’s tale… But we also know that what we see with our eyes alone…isn’t necessarily the truth. Here’s a young man. He is the youngest son of the noble Beoulve…pillars of knighthood. There’s no record of his playing an active part in history but…According to the “Durai Report” released last year (concealed for many years by the church), this unknown man is the true hero…The church claims he was a blasphemer and anarchist-the root of all evil…But is this the “truth”? Won’t you join me on a journey for the “truth”?
If you played the game, you know Delita manipulated events to rise ranks and end the war. He also knew the plot of the Lucavi and…the church. The Glabados Church’s plan was to lure both kingdoms into a war of attrition.
In fact, Delita was to assassinate Goltanna. This would escalate the war and throw Ivalice into a turmoil. Then, the church could rise into a more prominent institution. But of course, it didn’t quite work out that way. Delita, a commoner, becomes King of Ivalice to clean up corruption. The church loses significant power. Of course, to prevent their downfall, the Church of Glabados prevent the Durai Papers.
So why would Arazlam release the Durai Papers? Arazlam knows publishing the Durai Papers would counter-intuitively salvage the church. Ramza Beoulve and his companions are the heroes of The Zodiac Brave Story, the real Messiahs of Ivalice. The twelve heroes are
Mustadio is a descendant of Balthier from Ivalice’s past, which lends a sort of hero credibility.
Lucavi possessed humans only serve to stress the break from the past. The church presents Delita as a Machiavellian psychopath who tried to control the Church himself. By making him the villain, the Church could shake control from the nobles. Plus, Arazlam had a personal vendetta. As a theologian, he wished to see the church as an autonomous power. As a descendant of Olan, he is trying to save face for the Durai lineage.
Alazlam is trying to reform the Church of Glabados. He blamed all the right people. He threw the church officials under the bus and villainized Delita. Now he clears Ramza and Olan’s name:
Olan Durai reminisces in such a manner… Where does one find good fortune? What possesses them to live for the present? What treasures will they leave behind? The only thing certain is that he is the true hero, indeed. Years later, Olan Durai collected his experiences over a period of 5 years into a single syllabus. This Collection known as the “Durai papers” were to be presented at Prince Clemence’s meeting during which the new possessor of the throne was to be selected, but the church which feared public disclosure of the truth decided to arrest Durai and burn him at the stake for the crime of heresy. The retrieved Durai papers were then confiscated by the church for several hundred years. But I have uncovered the truth…Let me now revive his honor. Let his way of life be absorbed by the next generation.
And this is why I believe Arazlam Durai changed Ivalician history. Be careful out there; you never really know who you can believe.
