Gordon is a coward. As the Palamecian army attacked, Gordon fleed leaving his brother Scott of Kashuan to fend for himself. Running away, up to this point, was his only skill. Gordon chastised himself for being utterly useless. And until he proved himself at Kashuan Keep, he was.
Edward Chris von Muir is another coward. Yet, unlike Gordon, he did not seem to possess any fighting ability whatsoever. In Final Fantasy IV, his job is roughly bard. Edwards is physically and magically low in stats. His stats only improve exponentially at level 70. Yet, by then, he would have had enough battle experience to gain courage. He spent most of Final Fantasy IV running away from his responsibility. When he wasn’t running, he reluctantly hid in battle. In fact, he’s the only character in the series that hides in battle.
Relm Arrowny is only a ten-year-old girl. Even if she’s sassy and rambunctious, how much fighting experience can she possibly have? She manages to travel to a dungeon all by herself. However, she spends most of the time running from enemies.
Selphie Tilmitt is only weak when it comes to being a SeeD. She just doesn’t look like a soldier, much less a mercenary. She’s rail thin, much like Quistis. However, he clumsiness and demeanor doesn’t quit. Her original position for SeeD in the Dollet siege was intelligence, suggesting she’s not a fighter. Otherwise, her magical skills are extraordinarily high.
Eiko Carol is younger than Relm, at age six. Six. Really. Like Relm, she spends most of her time running away from dwarves, from whom she steals. Let’s say that again: she steals from dwarves. Enough said.
Tidus is athletic, but not a fighter. He’s just a blitzballer. However, since Final Fantasy X is his story, he had to “get good” at fighting, very quickly. For ways that only the narrative would allow, he’s able to pick up the sword and become a competent fighter.
Hope Estheim is just a kid as well. He’s older than Relm and Eiko, but even more awkward. Before the Purge, he was just a normal teenager. Immediately after the Purge, his personal issues kept him from maturing. His mom is a more capable fighter than him, yet it’s unclear how she gained her fighting experience. His choice of weapon is an oversized boomerang, showing just how awkward of a fighter his is.
Prompto is definitely the weakest link in the team. If he isn’t dying in the field, he’s wasting all of the Pheonix Downs, and then dying. He’s also the only member of the team who hasn’t received royal training.
