Whose voice is it during the FFIX ending narration? I think either Garnet, Mikoto, or Vivi before his passing.
The accepted answer is that Viv provides the ending narration to Final Fantasy IX. He also provided the narration with the death of Queen Brahne at the end of Disc 2:
[Screen is black: white writing appears on the black screen]
“I don’t know why Bahamut attacked the one who summoned him.”
“But we found Queen Brahne on the beach, next to her escape pod.”
“She could hardly move. And I thought she’d come to a stop any second.”
[Screen fades in. Vivi is standing alone, with Zidane and Eiko in the distance. They’re on the beach; a boat is washed ashore, which Amarant is on]
“I hate Kuja a lot. But I hate Brahne a lot, too…… so much that I wanted this to happen to her.”
“I should be happy, but…”
“Once I saw Dagger start to cry, I didn’t know how I should feel.”
“I kind of wanted to cry, too…”
[Screen shifts left to Brahne, collapsed on her back, with Dagger by her side]
But this could easily have been Zidane’s thoughts as well. Remember that Zidane gave Garnet the name Dagger, and really feels close to her. Near the end of the game, Zidane goes back for to help a dying Kuja. This would give them enough time to talk.
[Screen fades to black. It resumes far from the Iifa Tree; all is still and silent, except for the sound of wind in the background. The screen is still very dark. Mikoto can be seen walking around, though]
“Kuja… What you did was wrong…”
“But you gave us all one thing… Hope…”
“We were all created for the wrong reason, but you alone defied our fate.”
“We do not want to forget this. We want your memory to live on forever…”
“…to remind us that we were not created for the wrong reason – that our life has meaning.”
[Screen fades to black once more]
Does this mean it’s actually Zidane’s voice? Not necessarily. Since we see Mikoto walking towards the Iifa Tree, it could be her voice. Or it could be Garnet/Dagger’s internal voice, deep in thought as she was at the beginning of the game. Maybe it’s Vivi’s? He too was “created for all the wrong reasons”.
So then, up for debate who’s speaking at the end, even the other narration. But I believe it’s left ambiguous for a reason. Each of the characters shares the same thoughts. The narration can inform each character. For the first, it could very well be either Zidane or Vivi. For the latter, we have a greater selection of characters, including Black Mage No. 288.
I personally believe the writers wanted to make the ending narration apply to all of the relevant characters. They all had something to say on the meaning of life.
