I hear this a lot: Final Fantasy XVI come out on the PlayStation 5. I also hear the Playstation 5 announcement will be “right around the corner”.
Maybe. But consider this…
In 2005 – 2006 Sony announced then released the PlayStation 3. In 2013 – 2014 Sony announced and released the PlayStation 4. So then, they usually released the console a year after they announce it. The time from the PlayStation 3 to the PlayStation 4 was 8 years. This is close to the industry standard of a decades-old console.
The PlayStation 4, believe it or not, is only about 4 years old as of 2018.
No way are they going to announce it for two more years.
We have at least until 2020- 2021 before we even hear of an announcement at E3. You can assume we’ll get the new console in 2022. But Sony will also have to think about contracts. Each part inside a console has a contract they’ll have to wait to expire and/or renew. Then Sony will have to justify the graphical power and the hardware.
People who believe Sony will announce the PlayStation 5 doesn’t really have any reason. Well, other than an anxious desire to play a new generation console. Now, like – right now. Logically, however, it isn’t happening. Anything is possible of course. But don’t expect it. Another reason people think Final Fantasy XVI will be a PlayStation 5 release: long development times of Final Fantasy XV. Consider Final Fantasy XV as just a special case. Final Fantasy XVI probably won’t take nearly a decade.
With the new business restructure, Final Fantasy games release faster on a much more timely schedule. What does this mean? Final Fantasy XVI will most likely take within 3 – 4 years. Most likely this will be the “send off” Final Fantasy title on the PlayStation 4.
Of course, I could always be wrong. I don’t care about being wrong, we just have to wait and see for right now.
