A lot of us speculate on who’s going to direct the next Final Fantasy game. And mostly everyone’s anticipating Hiroyuki Itou as the new director. There’s a lot of hope to this. We all have good feelings about his work on Final Fantasy IX. Final Fantasy has become a cult classic in the Final Fantasy community. And Final Fantasy IX was medieval, so maybe he would repeat this success within the franchise?
Of course, that’s not necessarily true. Itou could make a Final Fantasy more realistic, or even futuristic, defying our expectations. Also, don’t forget, Itou was working under the direction of Sakaguchi, the writer of Final Fantasy. Itou didn’t create the script or the world of Final Fantasy IX. He captured the artistic and dramatic aspects and visualizes the script. And as a creative director he, once again, took what Sakaguchi made and expanded upon it. Same with Final Fantasy XII, where he co-directed with Hiroshi Minagawa.
So really, we don’t know what an Itou game would look like. We only know that Itou could bring someone else’s work to life, spectacularly so.
But then maybe that’s enough, right? Maybe we want Itou to work his magic? But he hasn’t been around in the director’s chair for a long while, since 2006. And don’t forget, he was only sole director once. Maybe he would do well to co-direct? Or maybe he’s content to come up with battle systems? So the question surrounding the Itou issue isn’t “will he direct?” as much as “does he still WANT to direct?”
Hiroyuki Itou is a game designer and he’s done great work making the battle system work with the story events and gaming elements. What if this is what he wants to do?
The more self-absorbed of us might say: “Well, he better if ___”.
Well, Itou isn’t an object. He’s a person. He can object if he wants. And maybe he’ll design the battle system, rather than directing a game. Directing sounds like hard work. You need a vision of what you want to see accomplished, and you have to delegate A LOT of work. They all have to report to you. Yet you have to report to the CEO under constant pressure and a deadline. Maybe he no longer wants the stress, and that maybe he’s considering himself.
Either way, we’ll have to see what Itou’s decision is when the time comes.
Most people wonder where Itou is. Maybe he’s hard at work coming up with the new battle system for Final Fantasy XVI?
