Miqo’tes are a feline race who apparently, Miqo’tes speak in cat puns.
What makes them talk like this? Why would a Miqo’te, who isn’t keen on associations with cats, indulge in so many cat puns themselves? Why deny the stereotype, only to further propagate it?
Thankfully, one Miqo’te doesn’t talk like this: Y’shtola. Andaeron stated that “Y’shtola’s a classy, educated cat”, meaning that she doesn’t rely on cheap cat puns. She speaks in a cultured manner. But there’s an implicit disdain for Miqo’te speech as if to say it isn’t truly a language.
Miqo’te Vernacular Eorzea (MVE), or Miqo’tes, is a dialect of the Eorzea language. Most working- and middle-class Miqo’tes speak Miqo’nics. It seems to be the more informal and casual end of a sociolinguistic continuum.
All of the other Miqo’te talk in cat puns. This seems to be a part of their culture. And it’s hard to break free of the ingrained mentality of one’s culture. So what if she’s suppressing her speech, as MajorFlamerider states:
She keeps it at bay and seeps it out little by little. She takes advantage of small conversations and little moments of confusion so that no one notices.
“Hey Y’shtola. An imperial patrol came through here, are you okay?”
“I’m purrfectly feline”
“I said I’m perfectly fine, thank you.”
One time she tried to hold it back altogether. But what happens when you keep it bottled up? One night she had gone months without saying one, and she had gotten twitchy, erratic, with trouble forming coherent sentences. Then the bottle burst…
The beast that was unleashed has since had all records of it removed, perhaps personally by Y’shtola herself. All that remains is witnesses circulating a name known only as “Meowstress Nyastola”. Truly terrifying.
So then, is Y’shtola’s speech all an act? When annoyed, Y’shotla does have a tendency to be passive-aggressive. One of these days, might she actually revert to her native speech.
Until then, she might just be talking Hyur.
