Remember how everyone noticed that Wakka was “getting fat”?
Yet he had the same character model as in the other game?
And everyone was serious.
I think Yuna’s weight also changed over the course of the Final Fantasy X saga too. In the first game, she wears:
a purple pleated, flower-patterned dress; black boots; a black spaghetti-string camisole under a white sash that wraps around her neck and over her chest; and a yellow patterned obi with a chōchō musubi knot and a decorative obidome to clinch the cords.
No doubt the obi covers her stomach. She’s wearing very loose fitting clothing to hide her weight. She has what we’d call “skinny-fat”; she looks skinny away or wearing clothes, but underneath she’s a bit chubby.
I think she’s definitely trying to hide her appearance in the first game.
This isn’t the first time Final Fantasy made a larger character depressed. They did this with Prompto. And like Prompto, Yuna’s weight wasn’t due to his depression (but she did probably feel self-conscious about her weight).
Now check out Yuna’s appearance in the sequel:
In Final Fantasy X-2, two years later, Yuna has undergone a transformation with a new revealing dress style and a more adventurous personality.
Her romance with Tidus energized her. She became more active and lost the weight.
And look at what she’s wearing now.
Yuna is much more comfortable with her body, wearing form-fitting clothing and showing off her figure. Her “personality” changes as:
she is now athletic, cosmopolitan, outspoken, and playful.
No doubt Yuna became athlete from playing blitzball. Wakka, on the other hand, stopped playing blitzball. He probably stopped working out altogether. He has a baby on the way, he can sit back and get fat. Yuna’s still too busy saving the world.
