Thanks to Pawn315 for the inspiration!
Near the end of the game, Zidane decides to help Kuja. You don’t need a reason to help people. You just do it. He treks down to the dangerous core of the tree to find a dying Kuja. Even Kuja’s surprised he came back from him:
Kuja: “…… After you guys beat me, I had nothing left…nothing more to lose. Then, I finally realized what it means to live…I guess I was too late.”
[Kuja’s head rolls to the side.]
Zidane: “!!!? Hey! Don’t you go dying on me, alright!? !!!?”
Then, the tree’s branches consume them both.
But what happens to them after the Iifa Tree? We know Zidane didn’t die. Did Kuja?
I believe Zidane and Kuja went to “World B”. Perfect Deus ex Machina; Cosmos and Chaos saved them at the last minute.
Of course, the theory below is pretty interesting too:
TL;DR opener (it really needs it): FF9 – Zidane and Kuja have bromantic adventures in the time before the epilogue to the game.
My second theory, regarding bromantic adventures of Zidane and Kuja, is mostly just from the sort of ambiguity regarding Kuja’s lifespan. I prefer to think that Kuja is slowly growing weaker. With this, they spend a couple (arbitrary guess) years traveling while Zidane has to take care of him more and more as Kuja gets weaker and weaker. It allows Kuja’s change of heart to solidify and Zidane gets more chance to understand his heritage and his background. It also provides some explanation as to what Zidane is doing in the seeming years that take place before the epilogue. Garnet’s hair grows back out and Vivi has kids(?)
Really I just want a sitdramcom starring the thief with a heart of gold and the slowly reforming omnicidal maniac. I mean can you imagine the emotional roller coaster of that conclusion?
Final Fantasy XV really influenced our expectations. Now we want to see more bro trips. But this is more than a bro trip. It would help Kuja empathize for a redemptive arc. It would also lead to a sequel for Final Fantasy IX. I don’t know how I feel about that, or why we would need one.
I don’t know how they survived. We do see Mikoto and the rest of the genomes walking towards the tree. We could assume they dug Zidane out of there. The time may have taken a year.
But I’d watch a special about this. That might be a pretty fun TV show to watch. Better than what’s on television nowadays. What do you think of this theory?
